It is a well accepted fact communication skills play a vital role in today’s world where geographical boundaries are gradually vanishing. To interact you have to read, write and speak effectively. It is a fact that a person with poor or ineffective communication skills often gets ignored. Equally important is one’s ability to understand what others speak and write. When somebody says that it is a bit suffocating to mug up the rules and it can even adversely affect the enthusiasm of students, it sounds that they are not entirely wrong. The problem is that they are in a haste to change a system that has been followed over centuries just for the sake of bringing in a change without thinking whether such a change would ultimately help the learner or not. We are not against changes and for that matter we should not be. But remember, a change would be worthwhile if it would bring in something positive and better. Now, the question is whether overlooking grammar would improve the speaking skills of a learner or not. If your answer to this question is in the affirmative, then of course you can go ahead with ignoring grammar. But if your answer is in the negative or if you are wavering and not very sure, then the option left with you is to pick up the grammar book or to evaluate yourself with a grammar test.
